Planning Your Wedding Day: Tips from Your Photographer

Create a relaxed, picture-perfect wedding day with expert advice from Kate Lafferty Photography.

"Your wedding day will be one of the most memorable days of your life—but it can also feel overwhelming to plan! After photographing over 100 weddings across South Gippsland, Bass Coast, and beyond, I’ve learned a few secrets to creating a relaxed, enjoyable, and beautifully photographed day. Here are my top tips for planning your wedding day timeline, choosing the right vendors, and keeping your day stress‑free."

Getting Ready & First Look

The morning of your wedding sets the tone for the whole day. Whether you’re getting ready at home, in a hotel, or at your venue, here are some tips to make it smooth and photogenic:

Allow plenty of time for hair, makeup, and getting dressed. Rushing leads to stress, and extra time allows you to enjoy the morning with your bridal party or family.

Keep your space tidy—a clutter-free room makes your “getting ready” photos clean and beautiful.

Have your details ready for photos: dress, shoes, rings, bouquet, perfume, and any sentimental items.

Consider a First Look before the ceremony.

A first look is an intimate moment where you see each other privately before the aisle walk.

It helps calm nerves, gives you time together, and allows us to capture emotional, candid photos without the crowd watching.

Bonus: It often frees up time later in the day for more relaxed couple portraits or mingling with guests.

Relax and Enjoy Your Ceremony

Your ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. The best photos come when you’re fully present in the moment.

Take a deep breath before walking down the aisle.

Focus on each other, not the crowd—hold hands, share a smile, and let yourself feel the moment.

Don’t rush your vows, ring exchange, or first kiss. Slowing down makes for better photos and more emotional memories.

Embrace the Magic of Golden Hour

Sunset, also known as golden hour, is the dreamiest time for wedding photos.

The light is soft, warm, and flattering—perfect for romantic, magazine-worthy portraits.

If possible, schedule 10–15 minutes around sunset to sneak away for a few glowing, intimate shots.

Choose Great Vendors You Trust

Booking vendors you trust is one of the best ways to reduce wedding day stress.

Your photographer, celebrant, florist, and coordinator should work seamlessly as a team.

I work closely with many South Gippsland and Bass Coast wedding vendors, which helps your day flow effortlessly.

When you trust your vendors, you can truly relax and focus on enjoying your wedding day.

Create a Photography-Friendly Timeline

A well-planned timeline ensures you get the best photos without feeling rushed.

Schedule enough time for family photos, couple portraits, and bridal party shots.

Factor in travel time between locations.

Ask your photographer (that’s me!) to help build a timeline—I know where we can save time and where to slow down for beautiful images.

Expect the Unexpected

Little surprises make your wedding day uniquely yours.

A gust of wind, a teary vow, or a funny mishap often becomes a favourite memory.

Go with the flow, keep smiling, and trust your team—these candid moments often make the best photos.
